SAC Shining Lights School SLP Podcast

Shining Lights Podcast

I found out about the Shining Lights Podcast through Twitter and was thrilled to have stumbled on this resource. This podcast series from Speech-Language and Audiology Canada is led by Dr. Lisa Archibald from the University of Western Ontario alongside expert guests. The main topic of discussion revolves around innovation in school-based speech-language pathology.

Since launching, Shining Lights has featured a number of guests on their podcast. All the episodes are great to listen and there is a new podcast every month. We love to hear how SLPs are working with schools to improve social and academic outcomes for all students.  These might be exciting times to be a school-based SLP in Canada!

  • Episode 1: Carolyn Hovey-Johnson

  • Episode 2: Melinda Hinch

  • Episode 3: Mary Ann Schouten

  • Episode 4: Debbie Maund

  • Episode 5: Sylvia Cutmore

And, we’re ecstatic to announce that Lyndsay (from Speech Language Literacy Centre) and I had the opportunity to record an episode as guests on the Shining Lights podcast.

  • Episode 6: Lisa Kohel & Lyndsay Bourdeau

Collaborating as a Guest on Shining Lights

We were contacted by the host, Dr. Lisa Archibald during the summer 2022, to discuss our school-based work in Alberta, specifically about interesting projects we have been doing or have been a part of and we were ecstatic to be considered as guests for the podcast.

We chatted about our experiences working in schools over the years and trying out different services delivery methods to meet the needs of students

This included how to help teachers feel empowered to meet the needs of all students in their diverse classes.

We also talked about the Language and Reading study group and how that has helped further our own understanding of language-based learning disabilities and has given us an opportunity to connect with so many amazing SLPs, teachers, and educators from Alberta and beyond.

Amplify Science of Reading

We hope you take a moment to check out Shining Lights! Another podcast I enjoy listening to is Amplify Science of Reading. This podcast is great for teachers, SLPs and parents.

An episode I recently listened to was Season 4, Episode 14: What it takes to be a literacy education changemaker: Kareem Weaver (January 2022)

Sold a Story

Another podcast through American Pubic Media (APM) worth checking out is Emily Hanford's series Sold a Story: How Teaching Kids to Read Went so Wrong.
