Resources for Parents, Teachers, and SLPs

In the age of the internet, finding reputable resources online as teachers, SLPs, and parents is both simple and complicated at the same time. Below is a list of websites that I’ve shared with colleagues and parents when asked about resources I find to be helpful.

The Reading League

The purpose of The Reading League is to increase knowledge of science-based approaches to teach reading as well as research that demystifies how people learn to benefit the lives of millions of students. We train and support educators and school leaders. By extension, we also serve parents, specialists, and researchers. We believe all children can learn to read and all teachers can learn to teach them.

FCRR Student Centre Resources

From 2004 to 2010, a team of researchers and teachers at FCRR collected ideas and created Student Center Activities for use in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade classrooms. The activities are designed for students to practice, demonstrate, and extend their learning of what has already been taught, sometimes with teacher assistance and sometimes independently. Students can complete the activities in small groups, pairs, or individually.

Accompanying these Student Center Activities is a Teacher Resource Guide that offers important insights on differentiated instruction and how to use the Student Center materials.

Flyleaf Publishing - Instructional Materials

I founded Flyleaf Publishing in 1998 with a mission to create fine-art illustrated, authentic, and engaging decodable literature to help students and teachers bridge the gap between phonetic decoding and fluent independent reading. Since that time, Flyleaf has published over 80 titles that are supplemented by evidence-based instructional materials that help students read better and teachers teach better.

Our books and materials are currently helping thousands of classroom teachers, special education teachers, reading specialists, intervention specialists, private tutors, parents, and grandparents launch students on the path to becoming successful readers. Consistently, I hear that Books to Remember are the first "real" books students are able to read independently. I am thrilled to know that our real books are making a real difference for students and teachers.

UFLI Virtual Teaching Resource Hub

The day-to-day work of UFLI encompasses four interconnected programmatic areas: Reader Development, Teacher Development, Technology, and Research. The development of readers and their teachers is at the heart of UFLI.

In addition to developing our web-based virtual tutoring platform, our Technology work includes online coursework and professional development, video models of exemplary instruction, development of software for students and teachers, and a resource-rich web site for students, their families, and professionals. Finally, through our Research programs, we study the efficacy of all UFLI work. Our studies have demonstrated that the methods we employ have a significant positive impact on readers and teachers. Ongoing studies are examining the effects of our technology-based tools.
