The Reading & Language Study Group with Lyndsay from the Speech Language Literacy Center

Starting the Study Group

The study group idea came to Lisa and I as we were really wanting to get information out into our local communities about how reading is connected to language.

There were several goals that we had in mind in creating this group.

  • We wanted to create a safe space for educators to be talking about the research evidence supporting how reading develops and teaching strategies that are supported by this research as well.

  • We also wanted to promote collaboration between SLPs and teachers in supporting students to develop their language and reading skills.

  • And finally we are aiming to make research more accessible to promote that shift from the research world into the practices in classrooms.

We have been running our study group for just over a year and feel so fortunate to have researchers join our sessions to discuss their own research allowing our group to ask questions about implementation and best practices right from the researchers themselves!

Topics for Study Group Meetings

Lisa and I work hard at picking topics that will be of value to our group, whether it is something people are more familiar with or something that may be a newer concept. I then tend to read articles or watch webinars as I’m on my treadmill looking for just the right one to bring to our group!

Previous Language & Reading Topics

Study group is also such a professional growth opportunity for me. I have the pleasure of working with Lisa Kohel’s brilliant mind and I am able to learn and grow from my teacher and SLP colleagues as they bring their experiences and questions to the group. I am a learner, I love learning and study group provides me with an opportunity every month to fill my bucket.
